FCDOT to proceed with sidewalk project in Bailey’s Crossroads

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation announced on Nov. 4 that it’s moving forward with 16 new active transportation projects throughout the county. The Board of Supervisors allocated $9.9 million for the projects in August.
The only one in the Annandale/Mason District area is a 200-foot sidewalk along the west side of Carlin Springs Road just north of the Seminary Road intersection in Bailey’s Crossroads.
That $860,000 project, currently in the pre-scoping phase, also includes upgraded curb ramps and pedestrian-scale lighting.
During the pre-scoping phase, FCDOT will conduct traffic studies, identify environmental considerations, and develop preliminary cost estimates.
The 16 projects are the latest additions to the county’s $100 million Active Transportation commitment and were selected through a multi-step prioritization process using district-wide project shortlists.
The new projects are part of a $25.4 million active transportation package that also includes sidewalks and other improvements already underway, maintenance, planning, and the county’s investment in Capital Bikeshare.

Projects previously funded that are just getting started include:
- 300 feet of sidewalk on Columbia Pike in Bailey’s Crossroads to close a gap between Blair Road and Gordon Street.
- A pedestrian hybrid beacon at the Columbia Pike/Tyler Street intersection in Bailey’s Crossroads, or if that isn’t feasible, rectangular rapid flashing beacons and a pedestrian refuge island.
- A 150-foot sidewalk on Leesburg Pike in Bailey’s Crossroads to close a gap between Seminary Road and Carlin Springs Road.
- A marked crosswalk with a pedestrian refuge island and relocated bus stop at Patrick Henry Drive and Willston Drive in Seven Corners.
These projects are in the design phase:
- A sidewalk in Bailey’s Crossroads on the westbound lane of Leesburg Pike across the Liberty Gas Station frontage to connect with the shopping center to the east.
- A pedestrian refuge island at the Heritage Drive/Commons Drive intersection in Annandale. (A refuge island at Heritage Drive and Rectory Lane has been canceled.)
In 2021, the Board of Supervisors set a goal to invest $100 million over a six-year period for infrastructure projects to improve bicycle and pedestrian safety in areas near schools, parks, public transportation, and other high-traffic areas.
As of fall 2026, the board approved four rounds of funding totaling $82 million. An additional $8.94 million allocation is anticipated in the coming months.
