FCPD is hiring school crossing guards
The Fairfax County Police Department is hiring crossing guards for part-time morning and afternoon shifts at schools throughout the county.
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors on Sept. 15 approved nearly $708,000 to restore crossing guards at 10 high schools following strong opposition after the board eliminated high school crossing guards earlier this year. Since the start of the school year, there have been multiple crashes and near misses outside Fairfax County schools.
Crossing guards are paid $18 to $30 an hour, depending on qualifications. There are no benefits for crossing guards hired for one crossing for 10 hours a week. Guards who work at two more crossings, for 20 or more hours a week, are eligible for benefits.

One-hour shifts are scheduled for morning arrival (7-9:30 a.m.) or afternoon dismissal (2-4:45 p.m.).
Crossing guards are responsible for controlling traffic to ensure the safe and orderly movement of student pedestrians to and from school, monitoring “wink-o-matic” flashing yellow lights, and reporting crashes and hazardous traffic conditions at student crossing locations.
Required qualifications include:
- knowledge of traffic regulations;
- skill in the use of tact and courtesy;
- ability and willingness to work in inclement weather;
- ability to work with children;
- ability to follow written and oral instructions; and
- ability to maintain a high level of ethical standards and integrity.
Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to a high school diploma or a GED.
