George Mason Regional Library will close Oct. 23 for renovations
George Mason Regional Library is scheduled to close next month for a two-year renovation project.
The library’s last day will be Oct. 23. In advance of the closure, the shelves will become increasingly bare as staff transfer books to storage or other libraries.
The George Mason Friends will host its annual Fall Book Sale Sept. 24-27, 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. each day.
The Friends group will stop accepting book donations on Sept. 6. During the renovation, they will accept donations at another location; details to come.
The $15 million renovation includes a new, more logical layout, additional small rooms for quiet study and small meetings, a dedicated space for teens, an upgraded children’s area, a maker space, flexible meeting space that will be available when the library is closed, rooftop solar panels, and energy-saving improvements.
The Fairfax County Public Library had searched for a nearby space for a temporary location during the closure but was unable to find one.

During the closure, FCLP suggests that people visit the Kings Park, Richard Byrd, or Thomas Jefferson libraries. The Culmore Library is closed for an HVAC replacement and is expected to reopen in mid to late February. Some materials from that library are housed at the Health & Wellness Hub at Culmore Methodist Church.
The Thomas Jefferson Library will have extended hours beginning in early 2027.
The last day to place holds for pickup at George Mason is Oct. 9. The last day holds will be delivered to the library is Oct. 13. Holds must be picked up by Oct. 23.
All customer holds will be paused for the duration of the closure unless otherwise changed in your library account to another branch.
Staff at any library can help customers redirect holds for pickup at nearby locations. Materials can be picked up at or returned to any library branch. Digital library resources, including e-books, audiobooks, and online databases, remain available 24/7 to all cardholders via the library’s website.
The library was built in 1965. It needs to be renovated, the FCPL says, because “the building systems and infrastructure are nearing the end of their life cycle, and the layout does not meet the current and future operational needs of the library.”
