George Mason Regional Library will close Oct. 23 for renovations
George Mason Regional Library is scheduled to close next month for a two-year renovation project.
The library’s last day will be Oct. 23. In advance of the closure, the shelves will become increasingly bare as staff transfer books to storage or other libraries.
George Mason Friends will host its annual Fall Book Sale Sept. 24-27, 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. each day.
The Friends group will stop accepting book donations on Sept. 6. During the renovation, they will accept donations at another location; details to come.
The $15 million renovation includes a new, more logical layout, additional small rooms for quiet study and small meetings, a dedicated space for teens, an upgraded children’s area, a maker space, flexible meeting space that will be available when the library is closed, rooftop solar panels, and other energy-saving improvements.
The Fairfax County Public Library had searched for a nearby space for a temporary location during the closure but was unable to find one.

During the closure, FCLP suggests that people visit the Kings Park, Richard Byrd, or Thomas Jefferson libraries. The Culmore Library is closed for an HVAC replacement and is expected to reopen in mid to late February. Some materials from that library are housed at the Health & Wellness Hub at Culmore Methodist Church.
The Thomas Jefferson Library will have extended hours beginning in early 2027.
The last day to place holds for pickup at George Mason is Oct. 9. The last day holds will be delivered to the library is Oct. 13. Holds must be picked up by Oct. 23.
All customer holds will be paused for the duration of the closure unless otherwise changed in your library account to another branch.
Staff at any library can help customers redirect holds for pickup at nearby locations. Materials can be picked up at or returned to any library branch. Digital library resources, including e-books, audiobooks, and online databases, remain available 24/7 to all cardholders via the library’s website.
The library was built in 1965. It needs to be renovated, the FCPL says, because “the building systems and infrastructure are nearing the end of their life cycle, and the layout does not meet the current and future operational needs of the library.”
Last date when will all checked out will be due.
I believe this is the second renovation as this current building is not the original from 1965. I remember one around 2000 when I was a kid. I’m happy for George Mason library!
I think it was expanded at some point since it was built. I remember when it was a storefront on Annandale Rd before Columbia Pike.
Been a bad library year, already Culmore has been closed since the beginning of 2026 and now not set to reopen till Feb 2027 And now we’re losing Annandale for 2 years . They are always like oh you can go to others like Thomas Jefferson , Kings park etc Well , that’s nice if you have a way to do that( many people walk or use public transportation) but for many people just zipping over to another Library is not an option. Just seems these could have been better planned out . Especially as not to overlap closures.
Absolutely! The county should have paused any work at GM until Culmore was operating again.
Absolutely agree. The George Mason library serves a very diverse community, not all of whom can hop in a car and go to another. library. The fact that FCPL claims it was unable to find a temporary site in the area is disappointing. Doesn’t seem there’s been much respect for the library’s patrons.
Why can’t they use a trailer in their parking lot like 30 years ago?!

Wait, how did this happen?? If a building has to close for a few years it’s always all Trumps fault, right????? Next thing you’ll tell me is the Keneddy Center needs to close for 2 years for renovations, at it was built around the same time as the library, however, I know we’d all agree that that would Trumps fault. I’ve NEVER heard of an old building, that needed a renovation unless evil Trump was trying to do something evil? what’s going on?
