Help beautify Annandale with native plants

Greening the Greenway volunteers planted natives along Columbia Pike in November.

The Greening the Greenway initiative will continue this Saturday at two new locations in Annandale.

The project started last fall when a group of volunteers installed native plantings in front of the ACCA Child Development Center on Columbia Pike. The initiative is aimed at enhancing the Annandale Greenway, a five-mile trail that runs through the center of Annandale.

Community members are invited to join the effort by planting more natives at two additional sites on April 11, 12-2 p.m. – Underdog Coffee & Bread at 7109 Columbia Pike and United Baptist Church at 7100 Columbia Pike.

Sign up to volunteer here. Participants will meet at the church’s parking lot on Chatelain Road.

Increasing the amount of native plantings will beautify the area while eventually adding more green spaces to combat the “heat island” effect of uninterrupted pavement.

The cost of the plants was covered by donations from the community, while Earth Sangha, a wild plant nursery in Springfield, provided discounts.
