Help those in need enjoy Thanksgiving

FACETS, a nonprofit that aids lower-income people, is seeking donations to help provide Thanksgiving meals to those in need.

Since the start of the Covid pandemic, “thousands of our neighbors have suffered devastating physical, financial, and emotional impacts,” FACETS says.

“For many of us, the effects of the pandemic are finally subsiding. However, this crisis has highlighted the equity gaps in our community. Our most vulnerable and marginalized neighbors continue to face great challenges and uncertainty,” FACETS notes. “No tables should go empty this Thanksgiving. No parents should have to worry that their children are going without.”

The organization is collecting food and gift cards by Nov. 14. There are four ways to contribute:

(1) Monetary donations: Donate online. Indicate “Thanksgiving in the Special Instructions Field. Or make out a check to FACETS and mail it to 10700 Page Ave., Building B, Fairfax, VA 22030. Each $10 raised will produce five meals.

(2) In-kind donations: Food items can be dropped off at FACETS’ office (10700 Page Ave., Building B, Fairfax, VA 22030) Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Download the list of most-needed Thanksgiving food.

(3) Amazon Wish List and Amazon Smile: Check out FACET’s Thanksgiving Wish List on Amazon. When you buy from Amazon Smile and select “FACETS Cares” as your charity of choice, a percentage of your purchase price goes back to support the children, families, and individuals served by FACETS’ programs.

(4) Host a food drive: Choose a start and end date for the food drive. It should last at least two weeks. Set up a sturdy collection bin, hand out bags, and ask others to fill them with food and drop them off in the bin. For more information, contact Tessa Robinette, [email protected]. 703-352-3268.

  1. This is nitpicky and anecdotal but I’ve heard that items like Kraft mac and cheese aren’t appropriate for food banks because they require accessory items (butter) that are typically not an included item
