Hidden Oaks adjusts to pandemic with new custom programs for families or ‘bubble groups’

Even though Hidden Oaks Nature Center is not open for the public to visit the exhibits, the park is busy with children and adults enjoying outdoor programming.

Hidden Oaks, located in Annandale Community Park, is at 7701 Royce St., Annandale.

In December, Hidden Oaks is offering dozens of outdoor and virtual programs to meet the interests of young and old. Safety is paramount with all sessions.

One of the most popular opportunities is Nature Your Way this Winter. Families, or “bubble groups” including at least one adult, select the topic of their adventure and choose from a list of exhibit animals to meet outside by the carved woodland wildlife tree sculpture

The one hour walk and talk enables curious children to ask questions, share stories, and learn along with their adults. Senior interpreter Kim Young noted that several families have celebrated birthdays or other milestones with this engaging activity.

Families can register online through Parktakes or contact Kim Young directly at [email protected] to arrange for a program time that fits their schedule. The fee is $45 for a group of up to nine.

Starting in December, families can also register for a one-hour private Campfire Your Way for up to 12 for $90. In addition to roasting marshmallows and learning about nocturnal animals, the group will enjoy a short night hike.

Elementary-age children can expand their school science studies with outdoor direct engagement programs at Field Trips for All hosted throughout the week.

These one-hour classes, at $6 per person, focus on science enrichment based on the Virginia Standards of Learning with a twist of fun. Can you use the scientific method to hypothesize how many drops of water fit on the top of a penny? The answer is likely more than you’d think.

Staff also lead private scout groups with activities for all ages and levels. Contact [email protected] for details.

Enjoy a host of other programs, such as Make Your Own Flying Squirrel Feeding Box, Nature 50+, and Winter Tree Detective, plus a virtual backyard bird class. Find out about all the class opportunities here

  1. Hidden Oaks is a wonderful place–give it a try sometime! (No, I don't work there or get any kickback from promoting them–I just want people to know.)
