Just Neighbors relocating from Bailey’s Crossroads to Annandale

This former church building is part of the campus of Annandale United Methodist Church.
Just Neighbors, a nonprofit organization that helps immigrants
and refugees, is moving from its offices in Bailey’s Crossroads to the Immanuel
Methodist Church building at 7901 Heritage Drive in Annandale.

The organization is currently located in the Bailey’s
International Center at 5827 Columbia Pike located in the Southeast Quadrant. The
Board of Supervisors approved a land swap in February that would allow Fairfax County to acquire that property for a new human services building and road project.

Immanuel used to be an independent church but, after years
of declining membership, it was taken over by Annandale United Methodist Church
in 2012. AUMC uses the building for immigrant outreach, after-school tutoring,
English classes, and food distribution programs.
The sanctuary will be
converted into an office suite for Just Neighbors. The organization, which is
celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, plans to use volunteers for the
construction. The work should start in May or June.
“We will still be located in an area rich with low-income
immigrants, but we are moving into a collaborative relationship that will
benefit our clients and their families,” states an email from Just Neighbors.

  1. This will be hugely beneficial to the immigrant community in Annandale. Just Neighbors helps hundreds (if not thousands) of immigrants per year to legalize their status and come out of the shadows. And we know that obtaining legal status is an important step for lifting immigrant families out of poverty. Having them in Annandale will have a materially positive economic benefit to the community.

Just Neighbors does most of what they do through volunteers, so I encourage folks to check them out and consider volunteering.

    1. ^^ no thanks. I won't support organizations like this that aid and abet illegal immigrants and further the import of poverty and illiteracy into the country. I'm glad that this organization is moving further away from my house than where it is currently located.

    2. by the way Just Neighbors only serves those who are LEGALLY ENTITLED to services – meaning they are eligible by state or federal law. If someone comes to Just Neighbors and has no legal standing, Just Neighbors advises them of such, but does not serve them.

    3. I don't see how lawyers helping immigrants follow the LEGAL process, constitutes "aiding and abetting illegal immigrants." But I guess anything that results in more brown people living in Annandale is bad from your point of view, huh?

    4. Return them to sender, we don't want them here anymore. They wrecked Baileys Crossroads, and have turned the Culmore area into the slums.

    5. "Return to sender", weren't you moving out? You really need to move to another neighborhood and bitch to them instead! Do a favor to humanity and pick one with no internet access!

    6. 9:48 – I want middle-class people of all colors to feel welcome in Mason District. That is all. Penny Gross and her ilk will see to it that they are not.

    7. Ah got it 816, thanks for clarifying. People of all colors welcome, so long as they're middle class.

    1. It's a faith-based charitable nonprofit, how is that not a "house of worship function"? People do things in churches other than just pray.

  2. 68 townhouses at Heritage Mall, VDOT putting in bike lanes and narrowing lanes from Rectory as reported yesterday, all the street parking on Heritage… what fun. Any one of these in and of themselves would be acceptable. Altogether, this is a huge shift with lots of accidents waiting to happen. Thanks for all the great planning that led to all of these decisions. Good luck to the jaywalking students that leave AHS in the afternoon.
