Local student named AAA Safety Patroller of the Year

Will Kinne, a sixth grader at Canterbury Woods Elementary School in Annandale, was named Safety Patroller of the Year by the branch of the American Automobile Association representing the D.C. region.
Will is known for his calm demeanor, his ability to think quickly on his feet, and stay focused despite distractions from his peers, Fairfax County Public Schools reports. He kept his fellow students safe through all kinds of weather – even “snowcrete.”
The AAA award was announced at the school’s sixth-grade promotion ceremony this week.
“It means a lot to me,” Will said. “I have been trying my best, working hard all year, to keep people safe. This job shows you how to be a leader. Sometimes it can be pretty hard, but you push through it and learn you can handle tough things.”

One of his biggest challenges came when a snowstorm in January left cement-like blocks of ice. Will, who oversees the kiss-and-ride lane, was on duty when students ran into the traffic line when parents were dropping off their children, picking up and throwing chunks of ice.
“Will remained calm under pressure, quickly intervened, and guided students from the street to safety,” said Debbie Rozek, AAA school safety patrol adviser and an instructional assistant at Canterbury Woods. “His quick thinking prevented the situation from escalating and kept those around him safe.”
“Each morning, Will reports to his post ready to direct traffic and guide students safely from their vehicles into the school,” Rozek said. “At times, peers attempt to distract him or make light of his responsibilities, but Will handles these moments with impressive composure.”
