Garrett McGuire, a Democrat, easily won a special election Jan. 20 to represent the 17th District in the Virginia House of Delegates.

McGuire beat Republican candidate Christopher Cardiff, getting just over 78 percent of the vote, the Virginia Department of Elections reports. The reliably Blue 17th District includes parts of Franconia, Rose Hill, and Springfield.

The previous District 17 delegate, Mark Sickles, resigned after being appointed Secretary of Finance by Gov. Abigail Spanberger. McGuire will serve the remainder of Sickles’ term, which runs through 2027.

McGuire is board chair for United Community, a nonprofit that assists lower-income residents along the Route 1 corridor. He previously chaired the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board.

Democrats retained four House seats in two recent special elections in Northern Virginia and two in the Richmond area, enabling the party to maintain its comfortable majority at the start of the 2026 General Assembly.

If Democratic Del. Elizabeth Bennett-Parker wins a special election on Feb. 10 for the Senate seat vacated by Adam Ebbin, the Democrats will retain their narrow majority in the Senate.
