More people can get Monkeypox vaccine

Monkeypox virus [CDC]

The Virginia Department of Health has expanded eligibility for the Monkeypox vaccine.

People of any sexual orientation or gender are eligible if:
• They have had anonymous sex or more than one sexual partner in the last two weeks.
• Sex workers.
• Staff at establishments where sexual activity occurs, such as bathhouses, saunas, and sex clubs.

Vaccine supplies are still limited. The Fairfax County Health Department urges anyone at risk or who thinks they might have been exposed to complete an online interest form to request a vaccine.

As of Aug. 23, there were 278 Monkeypox cases in Virginia, 10 hospitalizations, and zero deaths.

With 62 cases, the Fairfax Health District has by far the most Monkeypox cases in the state. The Arlington Health District is in second place with 44, followed by Alexandria with 43.

The risk of Monkeypox infection among the public is considered low. Most cases have been among men who have sex with men.

Anyone, however, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation, can get Monkeypox if they have close contact with someone infected with the virus.

Small mammals can also contract Monkeypox. The Virginia Health Department urges people who have the disease or have been around infected people to get their pets tested by a veterinarian.

Two types of vaccines are available: Jynneos has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the prevention of Monkeypox in adults and has been authorized for people under age 18. ACAM2000, a vaccine used to prevent Smallpox, is also used for Monkeypox.

      1. NOT, it just spreads more rapidly in actively sexual contact communities. Wait to you see what happens in the colleges this year where testosterone and pheromones are exploding like geysers.

Don’t be stupid: reduce your sexual activities and do not stereotype this virus, it’s here to stay for a while, and it has no boundaries.

        1. I don’t pay 50k annual tuition for my daughter to catch monkeypox. I pay it so she can graduate, move back home, and tell me how I’m a horrendous person.
