New pickleball courts to open next week

The pickleball courts are nearing completion.

The new pickleball courts at Wakefield Park in Annandale are expected to open on June 18.

The Fairfax County Park Authority’s project to renovate the Wakefield tennis complex includes the reconstruction of tennis courts #9 and #10, new practice tennis courts, and removal of two platform tennis courts, as well as two new pickleball courts.

Courts #9 and #10 are also lined for two pickleball on each tennis court. There are portable pickleball nets on wheels.

Additional site improvements include construction of ADA-compliant walkways to the courts, reconstruction of the service road, and installation of bench pads.

There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 25 at 9 a.m. followed by a pickleball demonstration.

Funding for the $410,000 project comes from Fairfax County’s park renovation budget and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

  1. Yay! The county needs to build more dedicated pickleball courts. Tennis players are mad that their courts are being overrun by PB, and its really nice to play on a court with only one set of striped lines. I hope they continue to build more pickleball courts.
