New restaurant will bring Hawaiian cuisine – including Spam – to Annandale

Three restaurants will open in this spot at 4363 John Marr Drive.

An L&L Hawaiian BBQ restaurant and two other businesses – a beer garden and cane sugar juice bar – will share the last vacant storefront at the EastGate Shopping Center on John Marr Drive in Annandale.

L&L Hawaiian BBQ features a traditional Hawaiian plate lunch, consisting of two servings of rice, one serving of macaroni salad, and a choice of fish, chicken, or other protein.

Also on the menu: BBQ chicken and BBQ beef bowls, burgers, fried shrimp, fried chicken, and shredded pork and cabbage.

There is also Spam, a canned meat, which has long been a popular comfort food in Hawaii.

L&L Hawaiian BBQ serves Spam Musubi, consisting of a slice of Spam grilled in a teriyaki or soy sauce glaze on top of a rectangle of white rice and wrapped in dried seaweed. Spam Saimin is a noodle soup served with Spam and green onion.

The chain celebrates National Spam Musubi Day on Aug. 8.

The first L&L was founded in Hawaii in 1952. L&L Hawaiian BBQ became a franchise company in 1990. There are more than 200 locations in the United States, most of them in Hawaii.

The Annandale location will be the second in Virginia. The other one is in Chesapeake.

A contractor working on renovating the building said they hope to finish in August.

  1. I walked by L&L yesterday and there was a lot of construction going on in the interior, I’d say it’s really doubtful it will open in August.

  2. Terrific!!! I miss the Hawaiian restaurant that closed in Shirlington (Hula Girl) and am looking forward to this new restaurant and the other businesses which will open in this space.

    1. Was a big fan of Hula Girl, especially their Poke. I know there is Poke at The Block but was hoping this place would have it to. Really hoping the beer garden has a large variety of beers and preferably not 90% IPAs.

  3. “Spam Saimin is a noodle soup served with Spam and green onion.”

Are you sure that’s how it’s spelled? I do like green sprigs and spam, I think I might like Spam Saimin!

    1. Saimin is spelled correctly. It’s very similar to ramen, especially the noodles, but the broth is milder.

  4. OMG! I love L&L and used to get lunch there all the time when we lived in Ventura, CA. I miss it since we moved back east.

    1. It might not have been created in Hawaii, but it is definitely a big part of Hawaiian cuisine. I’ve never seen spam served in McDonald’s and in restaurants other than in Hawaii.

  5. In the meantime if you crave some authentic Hawaiian food check out Momo & Poke in the Mt Vernon area of Alexandria. I can’t wait to try L&L though

  6. Brings back happy memories of our family’s time stationed at MCB Kaneohe!
Can’t wait to see if this is the real deal🌺

  7. Wow, great! Lived in Hawaii for years, ate at L&L often. Hoping it’s just as good, can’t wait until it opens.

  8. How’s it! Anyone hear about when L&L Hawaiian food will open in Annandale. Va? Seems like they’ve been doing work at this location for several months now. So looking forward to having some aloha food. Mahalo!
