New sushi restaurant will offer Thai cuisine

Akeno is moving into the vacant space between Taco Rock and T-Mobile.

Akeno Sushi Bar & Restaurant, under construction in Pinecrest Plaza, will serve sushi with a taste of Thailand.

The co-owners Eakachai (Sean) Promsiri and Anawat Jaithum are both originally from Thailand. In addition to traditional Japanese sushi, they are planning creative sushi varieties with Thai noodles, ramen, lemongrass, eggplant, and Thai spices.

They anticipate opening Akeno in May or June, about the time they hope the COVID-19 pandemic will be winding down and people who’ve been stuck at home cooking and eating takeout for the past year will be flocking to restaurants.

Both Promsiri and Jaithum have more than 10 years of experience in the restaurant business, and Promsiri owns Noodles on 11 in D.C.

They chose to open Akeno in Pinecrest Plaza because “it’s a residential area with a lot of potential,” Promsiri says.

Akeno means sunrise in Japanese.

  1. Interesting how these Thai places will have sushi and Japanese food. There's also Nua Haus Thai Sushi in Annandale. Thw two cuisines are pretty different. Thai is very bold, and incorporates all 5 taste types into their food. Japanese is very simple, and aims for fresh ingredients taste.

    1. Like Your comment, Akeno concept is A.T.H (Art, Taste and Healthy). Because foods are no limit, we have created our menu that combines variety of foods. Akeno will also offer Omakase tasting at the bar. We are very exciting to be part of the area.
