Planning underway for Audrey Moore RECenter renovation

Planning is underway for renovating the Audrey Moore RECenter in Annandale.

Fairfax County has signed a contract with the DLR Group
for architectural and engineering design services.

The first phase of the project – including design, planning,
and preliminary construction – was funded with $20 million from a park bond
approved by voters in 2020. Additional funds will be included in the next park
bond.

A community survey will go out soon, asking residents what
they like and don’t like about the Audrey Moore RECenter, what they want
expanded, and what new facilities they want, says Braddock Supervisor James
Walkinshaw.

Walkinshaw anticipates the most popular facilities will be
the swimming pool and pottery room. He expects the public might want an
upgraded weight room, a café or snack bar, modernized locker rooms, and a
designated pickleball court.

The HVAC system needs an upgrade, he said, and the project
might be a good candidate for solar energy. Also, it’s likely the center will
need more flexible multi-use space to accommodate new fitness trends.

Walkinshaw doesn’t think the building will be totally
demolished, but “it will be a gut renovation and redo.”

  1. The handball/ racketball courts need new lighting, air conditioning, and floors. Otherwise they are a great asset.
