Renovations to start soon at Kings Park Shopping Center

The new look for the Kings Park Shopping Center.

Renovations are beginning soon at the Kings Park Shopping Center, which is west of Annandale between Braddock Road, Burke Lake Road, and Rolling Road.

The Giant grocery store will be expanded from its current size, 28,000 square feet, to just over 50,000 square feet. The new building will have a higher ceiling; from the street, it will look like it has two stories.

Giant will close June 19, and demolition will start after July 4, says Rosemary Ryan of Braddock Supervisor John Cook’s office.

To create adequate parking for the new, bigger Giant, the
building that used to house the Kings Park Veterinary Hospital at 5241
Rolling Road, will be demolished, too. The project is scheduled to be finished in March 2015. The renovation of Giant is being undertaken by the Giant Food Co.
At the same time, Regency Centers, which owns the rest of the shopping center is updating the center with new facades, so the stores will look like they have two stories. “The renovation won’t add to the footprint, but will add more visual interest,” Ryan says. That project is expected to be completed by Thanksgiving 2014.

The current open area with outdoor seating between Giant and CVS will be converted to a larger plaza for outdoor dining and will have piped-in music. This area will be available to patrons of all of the restaurants in the shopping center.

The community room on the second floor of the shopping center, which was badly damaged several years ago when the pipes burst, will be renovated, too. It’s currently managed by the Braddock Road Youth Club, which is negotiating with Regency to continue that relationship.

The renovation also calls for a new entrance to the center from Rolling Road, parking lot improvements, and new sidewalks. Businesses will stay open during the renovation.

  1. Thanks for posting this! We frequent the Kings Park Giant grocery store for picking up snacks and supplies for after-school activities.

  2. The Bloom on Columbia Park will probably remain vacant for awhile. The owner of the shopping center wants another Grocery Store there, but with Giant and Harris Teeter within minutes, I'm not sure what could possibly compete.

  3. This is so nice!
Any word on a whether they'll put in a coffee shop to replace the Caribou?
