Support groups forming in Annandale for domestic abuse survivors

The Fairfax County Office for Women and Domestic and Sexual Violence Services is forming free, confidential support groups in the Annandale area for women who’ve experienced abuse.

A group for women who have been or are continuing to be subjected to domestic abuse—physical, emotional, or verbal—will meet for eight sessions on Wednesdays, 6:30-8:30 p.m. The group promotes understanding and healing from abuse trauma and helps women build a sense of community with other survivors.

Call Ariana Prawda, 703-704-6719, to learn where the group will meet and when it will start. This information is not being publicly shared to ensure the participants’ security.

Women in that support group with kids ages 5-15 might want to bring them to a Children Matter support group for children who have witnessed or experience domestic violence, which will meet at the same time and place. For more information, contact Salima Jiwa, 703-324-2395.

Through art, play, and other therapeutic techniques, children will learn about safe and healthy relationships, dealing with their negative emotions, and solving problems without violence.

Another support group is forming for women who have experienced sexual assault. This group, also meeting Wednesday evenings in the Annandale area, will help women learn specific strategies for coping with trauma and how to move forward with what’s important in their lives. For information, call Gretchen Fair, 703-704-6717.
