The Wedgewood Community Center offers a fun place for kids at Annandale apartments

Kids celebrate the end of the school year at the Wedgewood Community Center.

Kids who’ve been attending the afterschool program at the Wedgewood Community Center in Annandale, were treated to an end-of-the-school-year celebration on June 21.

The event was hosted by FACETS, the nonprofit organization that operates the community center at the Wedgewood Apartments.

FACETS handed out certificates and toys. Great American Restaurants donated free lunches, and Cakes for Kids provided desserts for the children and their families.

The afterschool program runs Monday-Friday, 3:30-5 p.m., during the school year. Students in grades K-5 get homework help and do craft projects, play games, and get snacks.

The Wedgewood Summer Camp, July 5-Aug. 17, 12:30-3:30 p.m., offers STEM activities, educational projects, crafts, and field trips. Both programs are free of charge and are limited to Wedgewood residents.

FACETS also provides programs for adults at the Wedgewood Community Center, including citizenship and financial literacy education, resume development, and culturally appropriate meals.

FACETS recruits volunteers to distribute groceries and diapers to families at the Wedgewood Apartments, Fairmont Gardens, and surrounding areas.

Before the pandemic, the program distributed about 3,500 diapers a month, says Allison Coles, FACETS senior director of development and communications. During and after the pandemic, that exploded to 30,000 diapers a month.

FACETS also organized a walking group, tai chi classes, a women’s group, monthly brunches, holiday celebrations, and a tenant council, which advocates for better property maintenance at the Wedgewood.

Families at risk of losing their apartment or job can get emergency financial assistance from FACETS for things like transportation and utility bills.

Coles says FACETS’ objective is to provide resources to families to “break the cycle of multigenerational poverty.” Funding comes from government grants and donations.

“Education is a lifelong pursuit,” adds Megan McDonald, FACETS team leader for education and community development. “Youths in their first year of college come back to provide guidance and mentorship to the younger kids.”

  1. What wonderful programs! I hope the tenants get the landlord to fix deficiencies. Bless the paid staff and volunteers who provide these services. I hope they make a difference in the lives of tenants to lift them out of poverty and encourage them to be good citizens.
