Unfolded strollers allowed on Connector buses

It’s just gotten a lot easier to take small children on Fairfax Connector buses.

A new policy that took effect Sept. 1 allows adults to bring a stroller on board without having to fold it and hold the child in their lap.

Strollers are now permitted in the ADA-accessible seating area of the bus but only when space is available.

Under the new stroller policy:

  • Upon request, a Fairfax Connector operator may deploy the wheelchair ramp to make the boarding process easier.
  • Children must remain secure in the stroller with all belts and harnesses deployed.
  • Stroller wheels must be locked until it’s time to disembark.
  • Parents and/or guardians must always hold onto the stroller.
  • The stroller cannot block the aisle or doorway.
  • The maximum size for a stroller is 48 inches long by 30 inches wide, including joggers and double strollers.
  • Older adults, persons with disabilities, and those using wheelchairs or motorized mobility aids take priority over strollers, except when the stroller is an accommodation for a child with a disability.
  • If the ADA accommodation area is not available, a parent and/or guardian must fold the stroller and sit with the child on their lap.

According to the Fairfax Connector, there’s been a substantial increase in youth ridership since May when children were allowed to ride free with a paying adult. “Fairfax Connector’s goal is to make it as convenient as possible for passengers to travel with their children on the bus system.”
