Demolition of the Wakefield Skate Park in Annandale is set to start soon to make way for construction of a new skate park, the Fairfax County Park Authority announced.

A phased renovation of the skate park includes a new layout design, demolition of the unsalvageable equipment, and installation of new equipment. The new layout will create a better flow within the skate park.

The new park will serve skaters and BMX riders of all skill levels. It will have a competition-style bowl, multilevel jump line, mini ramp, spine, A-frame, ledges, and much more.

The Wakefield Skate Park, outside the Audrey Moore Rec Center, was completed in 2004. It has been repaired several times, the Park Authority says, but due to the age and makeup of the facility, it is no longer feasible or safe to prolong the use of the original equipment.

Funding for the $1.2 million project comes from park bonds. The Park Authority hasn’t yet announced the construction schedule.
