We remember Virginia Tech
Today marks the fifth anniversary of the tragedy at Virginia Tech. On April 16, 2007, a student at the university in Blacksburg went on a shooting rampage, killing 32 people and wounding 25 others.
Among the victims was Mary Read of Annandale, a 19-year-old freshman who graduated from Annandale High School in 2006. Friends and family of Mary Read are likely to stop by her memorial (pictured above) today. It is in Canterbury Woods Park, Annandale, on Wakefield Chapel Road at the Braddock Road intersection.
Three other Fairfax County residents were killed at Virginia Tech: Erin Peterson and Reema Samaha, both graduates of Westfield High School, and Maxine Turner, a graduate of James Madison High School.
Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell has issued a proclamation declaring April 16 Virginia Tech Remembrance Day. In addition to ceremonies at Virginia Tech and across the state today, there will be an official moment of silence in Richmond, starting at 9:43 a.m., followed by the ringing of the Capitol Square Bell Tower once for each of the 32 victims.
You must have visited early. By evening there were many more flowers. Others were at her grave site at the other end of Wakefield Chapel. I'm glad that she is not being forgotten. It also reminds me to renew my donations for better gun control laws. Virginia has GOT to wise up. It's harder to adopt a pet than it is to get a gun.
