In recognition of the challenges faced by immigrants
in the Annandale community, the Annandale Boys and Girls Club is offering
discounts to immigrants when they register a child for any of ABGC’s
sports programs.

They will receive a 50 percent discount for
any first-time player. If a parent, guardian, or relative signs up to coach a
team, their child can play for free. If they sign up as an assistant coach,
they will receive a $10 discount for their child’s registration. These
discounts apply to any immigrant, regardless of status; ABGC is not asking for
birth certificates or IDs.
The sports club offers gift certificates
for friends and relatives that can be applied toward registrations or uniforms.
There’s also a sponsorship program allowing people to give a less-fortunate
child an opportunity to join a team.

Players can register online or at the ABGC
office at 4216 Annandale Road. Registration is under way now through early December
for basketball, indoor soccer, and wrestling.

This is open to the illegal immigrant?
These offers to open to all children. ABGC's mission is to provide a variety of instructional, recreational and competitive youth sports opportunities, emphasizing learning, teamwork and sportsmanship, focusing on age-appropriate player development that is fun, improves self-esteem, self-confidence, and respect for others.
All rec player's are guaranteed to play half or more of every game.
The guidelines in the 2nd paragraph are actually offed to ALL people whether they are an immigrant or not. ALL kids get the first season at 1/2 price. Any kid plays free if their parent coaches or $10 off if assist.
This is a really lousy and misleading article.
While ABGC obviously offers services, discounts, deals, etc. to groups beyond immigrants, the article is clearly articulating what ABGC is doing with regards to that specific group; it's in the headline. It's also not really misleading since the subset "immigrant" belongs to the greater set "all people," so she's not technically wrong. Maybe go have something to eat and relax a bit.
That is correct; ABGC's discounts are offered to ALL people!
I do not care that this is open to illegal immigrants but I do care that they are not requiring birth certificates. A parent could sign their kid up as being 9 years old but they are really 13. I also have an issue of offering a discount because your illegal or legal immigrant. We have many parents in the Annandale community who are not legal or illegal immigrant who are barely making month to month. I will not sign up my kids with ABGC if they do not require birth certificates since I do not know how old the kids are playing my child. This will give an unfair advantage to those without a birth certificate.
We're referring to ABGC's recreational program's, not their competitive level sports. On the recreational level, the players are asked what grade they're in, what school they're attending and they need to list their valid address, too. In addition, many of the youth sports league's require detailed information from the players.
If the player is applying for ABGC's scholarship program, the player needs to have an official form filled out by their school counselor in order to qualify for a scholarship. If there are any concerns about the player's age, ABGC will make an exception and ask for additional information so that nobody has an unfair advantage.
This article makes no sense whatsoever. My son (not immigrant at all) got the exact same discount.
