Annandale Civic Space to open in October

Workers are developing a new park in Annandale.

Construction is well underway on the Annandale Civic Space, the new park on Columbia Pike between the ACCA Child Development Center and the Annandale Volunteer Fire Department.

The Fairfax County Community Revitalization Section is planning a grand opening celebration for Oct. 21, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., with a ribbon cutting, remarks by county officials, activities, and information booths hosted by public agencies and private organizations.

The park will have a plaza, an educational garden, a “great lawn,” and a “topography playground.”

Hands On Harvests, an all-volunteer nonprofit that supports community gardens, will manage the educational garden.

Planning for the Annandale Civic Space started in 2018. The park, less than an acre in size, was conceived as a community gathering space and a key element in the revitalization of downtown Annandale. The county will periodically host events in the park to bring people together.

This land used to be an open field surrounded by trees.

The park is also in the middle of the Annandale Greenway, a trail running between Annandale Community Park and Green Spring Gardens.

Before the pandemic, the county hosted several pop-up events in that space, focusing on the arts, fitness, and other activities. The so-called “pop-up park” was a key component at previous Taste of Annandale festivals.
