Annandale has a new Ethiopian restaurant
There’s a new Ethiopian dining option in Annandale. JD Bar & Restaurant is located at 6669 Little River Turnpike in the same building that housed two previous Ethiopian places, Monarch, and before that, Damas.
JD features traditional Ethiopian cuisine with injera, including geba weta, doro wat, lamb wot, kifto, tibs, and fish dulet.
For non-carnivores, there’s a vegetarian combo and such items as shiro wot (chickpeas), miser wot (split peas), and mushroom tibs. Diners can request mild or spicy food.
There’s a full bar with beer from Ethiopia. The interior has a new modern look, with illustrations of Ethiopian scenes.
While JD is currently open, a grand opening is planned for May 20, says Biruk Tima, one of six partners who own the restaurant. Another partner owns Beteseb Farms in Haymarket, where he raises, sheep, goats, and cows.
Is it the same owners with different names for the restaurant, or completely new owners? Seems like lots of name changes for whatever reason.
Since the old abandoned Pinecrest Restaurant in the 1980s this seems like an accursed location where restaurants don’t seem to thrive, but hope this does well.
The service at this location seemed very leisurely in the past, but I think the neighborhood residents are in more of a hurry and don’t have all night to spend dining.
I love the new revamp of this restaurant. It is much more aesthetically pleasant and vibrant, with swankier interior decor and bar. The food remains quite delicious. I hope they bring back outdoor seating.
Good luck to the owners but this place is the “Dream Cafe” — the place that never seems to make it — of the Mason District.
