Annandale kiosk replaced

The new kiosk at the corner of Little River Turnpike and Columbia Pike.

Fairfax County has replaced the Annandale kiosk on Little River Turnpike in front of Walgreens. The glass cover had been broken, and the wood had deteriorated.

The kiosk is used by the Annandale Chamber of Commerce to promote its events and activities.

The new kiosk was funded from the Community Revitalization District “sinking funds” for revitalizing aging assets in the CRD right of way, says Sharon North, of the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services. Sinking funds are part of the unspent monies from the previous year’s budget.

North believes the kiosk was initially installed in about 2003 as part of the original CRD pilot streetscape before the Fuddruckers restaurant at that location was torn down. Walgreens opened on that spot in 2014.

Several members of the chamber and the Annandale Central Business District Planning Committee were involved in planning the streetscape.

The Annandale Chamber was most likely given responsibility for controlling the kiosk at that time, but the county doesn’t seem to have an official agreement between the chamber and county for maintaining or using it, North says. The chamber, not the county holds the key to the kiosk.

The chamber could not be reached for comment.
