Beyer faces three challengers in the Democratic Primary

Rep. Don Beyer will face several challengers in the upcoming Democratic primary.
Beyer has served in the House of Representatives since 2015. He represents the 8th District, which includes Mason District, as well as Arlington, Alexandria, McLean, Mount Vernon, and Mason Neck. Â
The primary is Aug. 4. Early in-person voting will be available June 18-Aug. 1. The last day to apply for a mail-in ballot is July 24. Election Day is Nov. 3.
Beyer is the senior Democrat on the Joint Economic Committee. He serves on the House Ways and Means Committee’s subcommittees on tax and trade.
One of his key priorities is providing oversight of the Executive Branch and protecting Americans from the “greed and corruption” of the Trump administration. One of the bills he recently introduced would restrict the construction of triumphal arches in D.C.
The other candidates running in the Democratic primary are:
- Michael Duffin, a counterterrorism expert whose career in the federal government ended when Trump gutted the State Department. Â
- Adam Dunigan, a Marine veteran and former case officer at the CIA.
- Mo Seifeldein, a former member of the Alexandria City Council.
Beyer’s campaign has so far raised over $1.6 million, according to the Virginia Public Access Project. Among his competitors in the primary, Dunigan has raised the most, with just over $144,500.
Arthur Purves is the only Republican running for the 8th congressional district. Purves is president of the Fairfax County Taxpayers Alliance. He previously ran, unsuccessfully, for Congress, the Board of Supervisors, the state Senate, and the House of Delegates.
Beyer served as Virginia lieutenant governor from 1990 to 1998. In 2009, President Obama nominated Beyer to serve as ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein. In 2019, he sold the auto dealership business his family established decades earlier.
