Dominion pays customers $50 for removing old refrigerators

Got an old refrigerator or freezer you want to get rid of? Dominion Virginia Power will pick it up at no cost and give you a $50 rebate.

The company’s Appliance Recycling Program saves energy by taking inefficient appliances out of service, helps customers cut their utility bills, and reduces the environmental impact of appliance disposal.

To qualify, refrigerators and freezers must range from 10 to 32 cubic feet in capacity, be at least 10 years old, and be operational and empty at the time of pickup.

To schedule a pickup, contact Appliance Recycling Centers of America online or call 888-366-8280.

The deal applies to residential customers only. Only two qualifying appliances per account are allowed over the life of the program. After the appliances are picked up, Dominion’s contractor will recycle the components and properly dispose of the refrigerant chemicals.

Refrigerator efficiency has improved dramatically over the past 20 years, Dominion states. More than 60 million of the 170 million refrigerators in use in the United States are more than 10 years old. More recent EnergyStar appliances are about 15 more efficient than those manufactured according to 2009 standards.
