Fairfax County will reinstall the glass recycling bins on Monday

The glass recycling bin in the parking lot at the Mason District Government Center was removed in March.

Fairfax County’s glass recycling program will resume on May 11, the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services announced.

The purple glass-only recycling bins will be reinstalled at sites around the county, including the Mason Government Center on Columbia Pike. A map shows the bin locations.

The bins were removed in March to protect sanitation workers during the coronavirus pandemic. During the last few weeks, residents had to either throw used glass bottles and jars in the trash or haul them to the I-66 Transfer Station or the I-95 Landfill Complex. The county stopped accepting glass in curbside bins in October 2019.

  1. There was talk about putting one at Audrey Moore since we're in a little bubble here without bins. Do you know if and/or when that will happen.

  2. WHY did the County stop accepting curbside glass in Oct. 2019?????

If Fairfax County wants glass recycled (Does it really??), it should be picked up at the curb…..as was past practice. We certainly pay enough taxes to have this done.

Many elderly folks cannot haul their glass to a purple bin. Others simply do NOT have the time to get to a purple bin. I have got to believe that most will just toss glass in with their regular trash…….or even in with yard debris (Ugh!)

So, it seems that if the glass cannot get to a purple bin, it will not be recycled (What a waste, imo). It seems that the County is NOT really into the recycling of our glass.

    1. Purple bins are lip service to cover up the County's unwillingness to curb pick up. Fairfax County of Lip Service! Look at the new picnic area popping up on Mason District park, then take a stroll on the park itself and observe the broken bridges that take months to be replaced, the awful creek management is killing trees that get washed out during floods. Drive on Kern Road and see the lip service patches to fill holes on a road that should be fully repaved. Go to some of the schools and see how they are decaying(I don't mean Langley, because that one was taken care of since the county cares about the rich). Yet we keep paying more taxes every year and asked to vote for new bonds. Why?

    2. Yes all the glass that's picked up by Ecoserv, llc as well as the glass collected by the purple containers. The glass is hauled to the glass crusher nick named big blue at the Lorton facility. Once crushed it is then used for various projects such as an additive to asphalt for road construction

  3. This is why county governments, like Fairfax, have had to make changes to the way our recycling is collected. The only material America recycles well is aluminum. Glass placed in single stream curbside pick up shatters and contaminates most of the other recyclables. And, if you are putting paper products in there, forget it. As soon as they get wet or soiled, they are no longer recyclable.

    1. I have to say so few know the fact regarding the glass breaking and contaminating the other recyclables. Good stuff.
