FCPS School Board to approve construction contract for new elementary school on Lacey site

The Fairfax County School Board is expected to approve a recommendation July 22 to award a contract to the CFI Construction Corp. for $13.749 million for the construction of a new elementary school on the site of the Lacey Center (3705 Crest Drive, Annandale; see map below).

CFI’s bid for the project was the lowest among 15 bids received. The highest was $15.13 million. Funding for the project comes from a 2007 school bond. Demolition of the existing building is scheduled to occur in August.

The new school, to open in the fall of 2012, will have 38 general education classrooms, two art rooms, three music rooms. and two School Aged Child Care (SACC) rooms.

A new school board advisory group will consider boundary options for the new school. Another new study group is being formed to look at overcrowding at Annandale High School. Both groups have their first organizational meetings this evening at Annandale High School, 7-9 p.m. PTAs at affected Annandale schools have appointed representatives to serve on these committees. All meetings of the groups are open to the public.

  1. The newly formed groups and the meeting tonight are part of a good faith effort by FCPS to bring the community into the complex and numerous issues that are facing the schools in this area. Part of this is an attempt to get community involvment a lot earlier in the process. As the FCPS site states – this initiative represents a new process for enhanced public engagement regarding issues that may have a regional affect on school communities. I would urge everyone to try to attend tonight's meeting.
