High schools compete in Trash Off

Here’s one way to get volunteers to clean up litter around Lake Accotink – make it a fun competition for high school teams.

Friends of Lake Accotink Park is sponsoring quarterly Trash Off events for high school teams in cooperation with the Young FLAPers.

The next Trash Off, originally scheduled for last Saturday, has been postponed to Jan. 23.

Teams from six high schools will participate: Annandale, West Springfield, Edison, Lewis, Hayfield, and Woodson.

During the first High School Trash Off in October, teams from Annandale, Edison, and Lewis high schools collected 1,500 pounds of trash in two hours. The champion team, Lewis High School, won a pizza party.

  1. West Springfield High School won the Jan. 23 Trash Off at Lake Accotink. The Woodson team was recognized for collecting the most trash among the smaller teams. There were more than 100 participants.
