Improvements planned for Minnie Peyton Community Center

The Minnie Peyton Community Center in Bailey’s Crossroads is getting an update.
The building, at 5920 Summers Lane, will not be totally renovated or expanded.
It will undergo piecemeal modifications to support program operations requested by the Department of Neighborhood and Community Services and to bring the facility into compliance with current building codes, says Laura Seidler, deputy director of operations in the Fairfax County Facilities Management Department.
These improvements are planned:
- NCS has requested the unused locker rooms be converted into storage space.
- To comply with state and local building code requirements, the stage in the meeting room will be removed.
- The restrooms adjacent to the main entrance will be renovated to comply with ADA requirements.
- The customer service desk located at the main entrance will be replaced to meet current functional and accessibility standards.
- Existing lighting systems will be retrofitted with LED fixtures to improve energy efficiency and meet building energy code requirements.
- Worn-out floor tiles in the main entrance area will be replaced.
- The ceiling in the corridor will be replaced.
- The shower room will be converted to a storage area.
- New cabinets will be installed in the computer room.

Construction is expected to take nine months. A start date hasn’t been set, as the county is still in negotiations with the contractor, Seidler said. The building will remain open during the work.
The Minnie Peyton Community Center has a gym, senior center, multipurpose rooms, arts and crafts room, teen and youth programs, and outdoor recreation facilities.
