All activities at Lake Accotink have been shut down due to possible sewage contamination.

The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services reported on June 30 that the Wastewater Management Program detected a sewage spill upstream of the lake.

“Out of an abundance of caution, immediate closure of lake activities is recommended for activities involving contact with the lake, such as swimming and fishing, as the water may be contaminated,” DPWES announced.

Bacterial testing of the water is underway, and results are expected within 24 hours.

  1. As taxpayers, we are the biggest union. I wonder what would happen if we stopped paying taxes until reasonable demands were met.

  2. What a terrific idea, and so well thought out! Lets see – if we all stop paying taxes, lots of critical services will cease. How will police, firefighters and other emergency workers get paid? Imagine the fun of the ensuing civil and criminal unrest. Maybe we’ll even get some good old-fashioned anarchy out of it!

And all because of what exactly? Ffx Co DPWES detecting a sewage spill upstream from Lake Accotink?

Look, we all get the chance to vote for the kind of officials we want to lead us. Get out there and work for the ones you want. It’s a far better look than figuratively holding your breath until you get your way.

    Sheesh.

    1. We already have unrest and lawlessness. Police don’t show up any more — and I’ve never called the fire department in my life. Hospitals are for-profit. I don’t send my kids to public school. The roads are horrible with potholes all over the place.

      1. I will say, I do not appreciate the ROI/test scores relative to the amount of property taxes paid annually toward our local public schools. Seems like a failing proposition based on the data I’ve seen, which continues to trend in the wrong direction. I would vote to reallocate money away from public schools unless and until some improvements (or plans to address the travesty as I see it) are in place.

        1. Parenting failure. I know too many bright, successful products of the school system, and the few failure to rise to potentials are the products of poor parenting. The school is not a parent. Get involved at home, keep ’em studying and doing homework, and they will get accepted at nine of fourteen colleges applied for, like some I know.

  3. County somehow leaks sewage into the lake they don’t want to maintain. This is so sketchy. They want to sell the land to developers.

  4. Geez, conspiracy theory much? There are sewer lines north of the lake along the stream and sewage leaks, often without the intervention of aliens or space lasers of any persuasion.
