Lane closures on Duke Street

There will be lane shifts on Duke Street in the Landmark area starting today as Virginia Department of Transportation crews work on the bridge over Interstate 395.

The westbound lane between S. Walker Street and Oasis Drive will be closed this morning for the installation of temporary striping for the traffic shift. Around 3 p.m., westbound traffic along the bridge over I-395 will be shifted to the right until this fall.

The bridge project involves replacing the concrete bridge deck and beams, upgrading the westbound sidewalk to a shared-use path, and widening the eastbound sidewalk. The project is expected to improve safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers and extend the life of the bridge, which was built in 1965.

According to VDOT, Duke Street averages about 55,000 vehicles a day at the interchange, and I-395 averages about 181,000, based on 2019 data.

The project is scheduled for completion in winter 2023-24. The project costs $16.7 million, with funds from federal and state programs, including Virginia’s State of Good Repair fund for bridges.

During construction, there will be intermittent lane closures on Duke Street, I-395, and the I-395 Express Lanes.
