McAuliffe sets Day of Service for Jan. 4
Community service activities have been scheduled throughout Virginia for this Saturday. One of the activities close to the Annandale/Mason area is a project to put together care packages for military families, veterans, and service members at Ravensworth Elementary School, 5411 Nutting Drive, Springfield, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. This project is being undertaken with the nonprofit organization, America’s Adopt a Soldier.
Another project involves sprucing up a shelter for young mothers run by Alternative House, a nonprofit organization that assists young runaways and other needy youths. This project takes place 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at 2998 Covington Street, Fairfax. The contact for both of these projects is Aaron Silver, 330-398-6930.
There are many more community service projects a bit further afield that involve helping the homeless, seniors, and children; cleaning up the environment; taking care of homeless animals; and other efforts to make a difference.
The Commonwealth Day of Services “marks one of many times in which we, as Virginians, gather to honor our communities,” says future first lady of Virginia Dorothy McAuliffe.
“We will come together to create a better tomorrow by recommitting ourselves to the future of the Commonwealth and to each other in the name of public service and bettering our localities,” she says. “Through volunteering, we get connected, we feel that sense of accomplishment, and we learn a little bit more about our neighbors and ourselves.”
