Military members get free admission to park facilities on Memorial Day

The pool at the Audrey Moore Rec Center.

In honor of the sacrifices made by members of the U.S. armed forces and their families, the Fairfax County Park Authority is offering them free admission to rec centers and lakefront parks tomorrow for Memorial Day.

The complimentary admission covers military members, veterans, and their families. It covers swimming pools, fitness rooms, drop-in fitness classes, gyms, and mini golf at rec centers and carousel rides, boat rides, train rides, mini golf, and camping at lakefront parks.

The Honoring America’s Veterans program is supported by contributions to the Fairfax County Park Foundation from individual donors and from donations in remembrance of Lt. Col. Gary F. Smith who was killed when terrorists crashed a plane into the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2021.

  1. This gift would be better offered on Veterans Day. A retiree who served three years at a base in Iowa is not the intent of Memorial Day. Confusing Memorial Day with Veterans Day cheapens the sacrifices of our war dead.

    1. James, no one cares, unfortunately. Nor does your government. Do you know how many American POWs were rescued during the Vietnam War? Zero. Look it up. Really enforces the priorities of of politicians and senior officers. Obama rescued Pvt. Bergdahl, a known traitor. I lost count of how many people wished me a nice “long weekend.” We’ve all been had. Pretty soon the left will reappropriate Memorial Day to something more PC.

      1. Tim, everyone cares. I remember watching the return of American POWs from Vietnam, and far too many went on to serve in Congress and various administrations for anyone to legitimately claim that veteran and MIAs weren’t addressed. Americans can do multiple things simultaneously, so wishing you a happy long weekend does not mean that they don’t take time to remember our war dead.

        1. I appreciate the sentiment, but tend to disagree.

If everyone cared, Hanoi Jane-backed Jimenez wouldn’t be a front runner for local office.

  2. The park authority has many well intentioned and lovely folks trying to run a giant operation equivalent to a Fortune 500 organization and larger than many state governments in the western US. They are simply ill equipped. Funding them with special ballot initiatives just isn’t worth it anymore. It’s like flushing money down the drain. The can barely use technology or communicate with the public. We need to stop finding until they get a real management operation in place.
