Inova Health System has provided more information on the future hospital at the former Landmark Mall, the Washington Business Journal reports.

The new hospital will take up the western portion of the redevelopment project, which is now called West End Alexandria. The rest of the site will consist of housing, retail, parks, and a transit hub.

A development concept plan filed by Inova with the City of Alexandria March 4 includes the following details, according to WBJ.

The 565,500-square-foot, 231-bed hospital would be a Level 2 trauma center. It would have an emergency department and imaging on the main level; a surgical unit on the second floor; clinical lab, pharmacy, dining area, and roof terrace on the third floor; inpatient units on the next six floors; and a helipad on the roof.

A 107,200-square-foot cancer center would be an extension of the Inova Schar Cancer Institute in Merrifield. It would have radiation oncology in the basement; oncology clinics, a clinical lab, and Life With Cancer program on the first floor; an infusion unit, pharmacy, and administrative space on the second floor; and clinical outpatient space on the top three floors.

An 88,000-square-foot specialty care center would have a café and prenatal testing on the first floor and clinical outpatient space on the second and third floors.

The proposal calls for 1,510 parking spaces. That includes 950 under the hospital and in a 60-foot-tall above-grade garage. The hospital would also use 550 spaces in an existing parking deck, the only part of the mall that won’t be demolished.

The new hospital complex will replace the existing Inova Alexandria Hospital on Seminary Road.

  1. I worked at Hechts there from 67-70. Watched the men land on the moon one Sunday while we were taking inventory. It was always packed with shoppers and the S & W Cafeteria was awesome. But the land is too valuable and this is a better use of it. I think they should still call it Inova Landmark.

  2. Thank you Annandale Today for keeping all of us and especially those of us who live in Alexandria’s West End informed about what’s going on with the redevelopment of the old Shopping Center.

  3. On e again Alexandria will reap the taxes and FFC will enjoy a Gordian knot of traffic. VDOT has no plans except moving the chairs around, to alleviate traffic. Across from Lanndmark (Big Lots) is also planned right redevelopment. Nothing said about the three sites next to it. Is Landmark Plaza Going to remain as a sprawling, traffic choked mall? It’s too valuable to remain as is. Across 236 Asian supermarket) again the land is too valuable to remain as a sprawling behemoth? Alexandria, FFC, and VDOT need to have a comprehensive plan for that area

  4. Finally something other than ethnic stores coming to this area!! You can tell that this is not Penny Gross’s area. Thank you Inova! We need an upgrade here.
