Pedestrian killed in Seven Corners

Bailey’s Crossroads residents attend a rally earlier this month to demand safer streets for pedestrians.

A pedestrian was struck and killed in a parking lot in Seven Corners following a vehicle crash on Wilson Boulevard on Aug. 18.

Police identified the pedestrian as Albert Sweat, 62, of Maryland.

Sweat was walking through a parking lot in the 6200 block of Arlington Boulevard shortly after 8:30 a.m. when he was struck by a 2017 Volkswagen Jetta, the FCPD states.

The Volkswagen and a 2012 Honda Civic were traveling northbound on Wilson Boulevard. The driver of the Honda was making a lane change from the left to the right lane at the same time the driver of the Volkswagen was making a lane change from the right to the left lane.

Both vehicles collided, causing the Volkswagen to go off the roadway to the right into the adjacent parking lot. After striking Sweat, it continued over a median and struck an occupied parked 2010 GMC Yukon before coming to rest in a mulch bed.

Sweat was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The drivers and passengers from the three vehicles were not injured in the crash.

Preliminarily, detectives do not believe speed or alcohol were factors in this crash. Detectives continue to investigate and conduct additional interviews.

Details of the investigation will be presented to the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney to determine the appropriate charges.

This is the 13th pedestrian-related fatality in Fairfax County so far in 2022. There were 10 pedestrian fatalities by this date in 2021.
