The Performance Bicycle store at 5817 Leesburg Pike in Bailey’s
Crossroads will close for good on Nov. 20. The repair shop at the back of the store
is already closed.
All bikes are 30 percent off; everything else is 50 percent
off, although much of the inventory is already gone.

The store has been in the Bailey’s Crossroads Shopping
Center for 22 years. An employee cited a rent increase for the store’s closing
and mentioned several places where it could relocate, none of them in Mason
District.

Staff are directing customers to other Performance Bicycle
stores in Springfield and Tysons Corner. Another alternative is the Pro Bicycle Shop, which opened in Ravensworth Plaza in Annandale in August.

This is just great, another good service and retail store leaving the dump. I cant wait to see what they backfill it with, probalby another nail shop. This just plays into the ongoing demise of Mason under current leadership. Soon there will be no services left for the middle class, like the Culmore shopping center that is full of junk shops. Thank goodness Peking Gourmet holds on, for how long is the question. I am certain they are concerned with the local chrime prevalent in Culmore.
Mason District is goining to get coined as the junk retail center of the County. All of the good stores are leaving, causing us to travel either further out like Merrifield's Mosaic, Tysons or Arlington for decent shopping.
There is almost zero bike infrastructure in Mason District. If you want to change that, pressure local officials. Disconnected bike lanes here and there are a joke.
Completely agree. Its like the bridge to nowhere. We have cycle lanes that do not connect us to DC where most of the bike traffic commutes to.

Bummer about losing Performance. For what it's worth, Spokes in Alexandria is not far away. As far as bicycling infrastructure, I'm an avid cyclist and northern Virginia has an excellent network of bike paths and bike lanes. Not sure what you expect politicians to do about a chain store – like Performance – closing its shop because it doesn't meet their corporate expectations. Perhaps you should open a bike shop and learn how tough it is to run a profitable bike shop.

I spoke with one of the employees and he informed me that it was because of the constant break ins through the roof and rear of the building. I guess bikes are a hot commodity. If we had less of a concentration of section 8 housing and cops on bikes patrolling our retail areas there would probably be less of this. The county she tax these horrible section 8 landlords to support additional police patrols. But that would be too smart.
I'd be surprised that a store is closed because of break-ins. That's what security systems and good locks are for. Break-ins through the roof? Seriously?
He showed me the cut out on the ceiling under the roof where one of the break ins happened. I was taken aback that they would go through that much trouble to steal bikes or maybe they new there was cash stored there. In any event, its troubling. The house be the stream on Columbia Pike that was occupied for years, beauty of a property overlooking the park was recently leased by the landlord because they had been broken into one too many times. Given its seclusion the house made a good target. Sad to see busnisses and residents leaving Mason because our supervisor cannot get a handle on this section 8 and crime problem.
