Someone was shot near Bellview Drive and Glen Carlyn Drive in Culmore this evening, the Fairfax County Police Department reported on Twitter. A male was found with gunshot wounds and taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Two men were seen fleeing the scene. Preliminarily, this does not appear to be a random act.

Updated April 18: The Mason Police District reports the victim was 14 years old and was shot multiple times. He remains hospitalized. Police responded at 5:22 p.m.

Detectives believe the two suspects were known to the victim. The suspects are described as two Hispanic teenagers wearing jeans and dark-colored hoodies.

  1. Culmore is full of gang members and it is just sad. I feel sorry for the people living there and no one should be outside around there at night, or even the day for that matter.

A mobile police unit should be stationed there full-time.

  2. I agree with you Mr. King, that it is no secret Culmore is a high-crime area in Mason District.

For all the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors talk about “equity” I do not see any urgency on their part to combat the high crime rate in Culmore.

Now, if a shooting like this occurred in the Sleepy Hollow neighborhood, I believe there would be a significant response by the Board and the Fairfax County Police Department.

Just like the building of sidewalks, the installation of traffic lights, and the slowing of traffic speeds, there is a disconnect between the talk about equity and “One Fairfax” and the reality.

As for those who demand meritocracy in Fairfax County’s Public Schools, including Thomas Jefferson High School, the problem is that the children who grow up in Culmore are not in a position to compete with those children who grow up in more affluent and safer neighborhoods in Fairfax County.

So unless and until the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors stop with the lip service and actually improve the government services (including public safety) provided to the residents of Culmore and other low-income neighborhoods in Fairfax County, I will vote for candidates that support “equity” over “merit” — especially those who rock the boat such as Ricardy Anderson.

  3. There’s a gang war between a gang in Annandale (24MOB/PMG/A-Town) and in Culmore (33MOB/VTK). Both of the gangs make music and have a lot of disses and actual dead people mentioned in the songs its really messed up idk how this gang feud has been going on but i’ve traced it back to 2016

  4. Only 14 and likely to lose his life already. So sad. Constant police presence, after school programs, interventions, dismantling gangs—what else can we do to change this neighborhood for the better? I used to volunteer teach English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) at Culmore United Methodist. Boys & Girls club programs, Scouts, homework help—what can we do to fix this? How can we generate money for programs, recruit volunteers and change the narrative?

    1. I’ll tell you what you can do: Nothing. The more you reward bad behavior, the more bad behavior you’ll get. It worked back when police were active, before we told them to sit it out.

  5. This is what we get for our higher tax bill, more crime. Fairfax you have lost your way into the abyss. Thank you BoS
