Sheriff’s deputy shoots suspect outside Inova Fairfax Hospital

An off-duty deputy with the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office  fatally shot a man reportedly acting in a threatening manner Aug. 15 at a bus stop outside Inova Fairfax Hospital.

[UPDATE, Aug. 18: The deceased man has been identified as Jovany Martinez, 29, of no fixed address.]

According to the Fairfax County Police Department, man had just been released from the hospital. He lunged at the deputy with a metal sign with a sharp edge at a bus stop outside the hospital’s green garage after having already injured a security guard at about 10 p.m.  The man, described as age 29 and Hispanic, was reportedly suffering a “mental episode.”

The deputy discharged his service weapon, striking the man several times.

Detectives from the FCPD Major Crimes Division have assumed primary responsibility for the criminal investigation. The Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office will conduct an internal investigation, and the deputy has been placed on routine administrative leave

UPDATE, Sept. 2: The Sheriff’s Office announced the name of the officer who shot Martinez. It’s Patrick McPartlin, an 18-year veteran with the department who was assigned to the Confinement Division. He is still on administrative leave.
