Supervisors approve county trash service for two Annandale neighborhoods

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors this week approved a motion to add two communities in Annandale to the county-operated trash and recycling program.

A new Small and Local Sanitary District will be created for the Canterbury Woods community, and the sanitary district in the Pleasant Ridge neighborhood will be expanded. The changes will take effect in July.

When the petitions for those two communities were presented to the board in October, a decision was deferred because there were extensive problems with the county’s trash and recycling operations, mostly due to a driver shortage.

At the Feb. 8 BoS meeting, Mason Supervisor Penny Gross urged the board to approve the Pleasant Ridge proposal, but said she is still not convinced that the county’s trash program can handle more residents.

While the county has made progress in collecting trash, recyclables, and leaves on time, Gross said, her office is still getting complaints.

County Executive Bryan Hill told the board the county has improved its service by contracting with outside companies and making some procedural changes. “Once we know how well we’re doing, we’ll come back to the board with other recommendations,” he said.

Many residents of both Canterbury Woods and Pleasant Ridge are unhappy with the private companies that serve their neighborhoods.

The Pleasant Ridge residents first petitioned the county for inclusion in the neighborhood’s Small and Local Sanitary District in July 2019. The petition was signed by about 65 percent of affected residents.

The action by the board adds about 116 Pleasant Ridge households to Small District 2. These homes are on Annandale Road, Hummer Road, Krysia Court, Pleasant Way, Ramblewood Court, Dade Drive, and Walton Lane.

The Canterbury Woods community includes about 517 properties on Wakefield Chapel Road, Queen Elizabeth Boulevard, King Richard Drive, Woodland Way, Canterbury Drive, and several side streets.

The Canterbury Woods petition, submitted in January 2020, was signed by 68 percent of affected households.

  1. Overall I’ve been pleased with county trash service. There has been hiccups here and there sure especially since the pandemic, but nothing to get too bent up about.

  2. Agree with the above. American Disposal is the pits. Local governments should force the companies to issue bill credits when they skip service, which they do frequently with no consequences.

    1. Amen to that. We’ve got American Disposal and they notified us that they are raising rates but we’ve had irregular service and poor communications from them for several months now. Looking for a replacement company now.

  3. The photo of the recycle bin is a problem. No plastic bags are to go in the recycle bin. Just put recycle material in loose. Keep glass out. Glass with no tops now goes to separate pick up places, mine is a big purple bin behind the Mason Dist. Gov. Cntr. Thanks to all who recycle!
