The Board of Supervisors on June 9 approved a zoning special exception to allow a major expansion of the private school for elite student athletes at the St. James sports complex in Springfield.

The St. James Performance Academy offers an online college preparatory educational program on-site starting with grade 5, along with athletic training, coaching, and sports conditioning built into the school day. It’s aimed at students preparing for spots on college or professional sports teams. The academy opened in August 2024.

The expansion will allow the academy to enroll 660 students and add 110 employees.

The project will consist of three phases: The first phase will add five single-story modular classroom additions on the west and north sides of the building.

During phase 2, athletic training facilities will be built on the north and east sides of the building. The third phase will add a second floor within the existing double-height gymnasium.

When all those components are completed, the size of the facility will be increased by 20,370 square feet.

Located at 6805 Industrial Road in Mason District, the St. James is one of the largest sports complexes in the DMV.
