VDOT announces 2022 road paving plan

The Virginia Department of Transportation will repave dozens of roads in the Mason District area this year, mostly in the Sleepy Hollow, Sleepy Hollow Woods, Annalee, Westlawn, and Jefferson communities.

A section of Leesburg Pike in Seven Corners and a section of Little River Turnpike in Annandale will also be repaved.

The bulk of the work will be carried out between May and October, said VDOT official Houda Ali at an information meeting on paving plans for the Mason and Braddock districts.

VDOT’s interactive online map shows which roads will be repaved in 2022. You can enter your street name to see if it’s on the schedule for repaving. If it is, you can see the contact information for the program manager.

Signs will be put up a few days before the work starts advising residents to avoid parking in the street. Work hours are usually 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation works with VDOT to add bike lanes, reduce road lane widths (“road diets”), or add crosswalks or other pedestrian improvements to roads that are being repaved.

This year, there are no new bicycle facilities planned for the Mason or Braddock districts, said Lauren Delmare, pedestrian program manager at FCDOT.

Two new crosswalks are planned for Mason District:

• At Westmoreland Road and Barrett Road a quarter-mile from Westlawn Elementary School, and
• At Westmoreland Road and Wayne Road, also a quarter-mile from Westlawn ES.

Two crosswalks are also planned for Greeley Road in the Braddock District near North Springfield Elementary School.

In deciding which roads should be repaved, VDOT prioritizes roads in poor condition and roads with high traffic volume, Ali said.

Roads in the same neighborhood are usually grouped together to achieve economies of scale. Roads with upcoming underground utility or other projects will be excluded.

VDOT has special trucks that use digital scanning, digital measurements, digital video, and GPS to measure pavement distress, roughness, and rutting.

  1. Obviously the truck completely missed Sleepy Hollow Road. It has more holes, bumps and Poorly patched holes than a kid with acne? Where’s Penny Gross?
