There’s a new dining option for vegetarians – Chay, a Vietnamese vegetarian restaurant in Barcroft Plaza, had a soft opening on Dec. 18. It’s located at 6351 Columbia Pike next to Jake’s Ice Cream.

A sign announcing the future restaurant was first posted more than a year and a half ago. “The permitting process took forever but we’re so glad we can now offer healthy alternatives,” says Thi Le, who owns the restaurant with his wife Lan Tran.

Many of the dishes feature meat alternatives, such as Thai basil “chicken,” clay pot vegan “fish,” and a lemongrass “beef” vermicelli bowl. There are also many vegetable, noodle, rice, and tofu-based items.

Other than a $48 Chay deluxe hot pot, most entrees are $15 to $18. Appetizers are $6 to $16.

Le says “chay” means vegetarian in Vietnamese.

    1. Great for the planet? Please stop with the unproven climate change statements. The earth was supposed to end 12 years ago and it is still here. That is because God created the earth and you cannot destroy what God created. Please……enough already.

      1. Actually that’s incorrect. The earth was supposed to end 11 years ago, but it was saved by liberal lesbian vegetarian aliens. Surprised you didn’t know that.

      2. Huh?!? The earth was supposed to end 12 years ago??? Come on… If you can’t care about the future planet we all live on, please don’t discourage the rest of us from caring and acting.

      3. Hell Yeah, Lakecia. Speak that truth. It’s tiresome hearing these “know it alls” spewing nonstop BS out their rearends.

        1. Look, this restaurant is NOT good for the planet.

What would be good for the planet is if America outlawed the eating of beef, pork, chicken, and other mammals (except for the 1%, who deserve this high quality source of protein) and instead require all Americans (except the 1%) to obtain their protein from insects and beans.

I’m not joking, we are facing climate armageddon.

This restaurant, which may well use fossil fuels to cook the food it serves, good for the planet? Nope. That’s just a sad joke.

      4. You better be consistent and go to a church if you get sick. God created you, you don’t need some crappy medical science to save you. Otherwise, you’re a giant hypocrite.

        1. Exactly!

Lakecia, please don’t vote or have kids (if you don’t already have them, and I sincerely hope you don’t!).

          1. Amazing how the moderator of this site allows personal attacks like this to be published. So biased and one-sided it’s not even funny.

  1. This is so exciting! We love Vietnamese food, and love being able to order everything on the menu. Eating a plant-based diet is so great for people’s health, animals and the planet!

  2. Not only was the planet supposed to have died 12 years ago but were all supposed to be dead from acid rain , the ozone layer and the ice age. I don’t worship dirt and water but I do like Vietnamese food so I may check the new place out.

  3. Good grief! What is wrong with you people? It’s a new restaurant, not a reason for debates and nastiness . Personally, I wish the owners good luck and applaud their very American entrepreneurial spirit.
