County to provide info on abortion resources

The Fairfax County Government Center.

In response to the Supreme Court’s overturning Roe v. Wade, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors on June 28 passed a board matter by a 10-0 vote directing staff to provide information on reproductive resources, services, and facilities available to county residents.

The Health Department and other agencies will work to prepare a webpage with information on these services, as well as help individuals understand their rights.

The board also directed the county’s legislative team keep the board updated on any state legislation that seeks to diminish access to abortion.

The Supreme Court decision striking down women’s rights over their bodies has resulted in “distress, fear, and anguish in our community,” said Board of Supervisors Chair Jeffrey McKay.

The ruling does not make abortion illegal in Virginia. Instead, it puts this decision into the hands of state officials, McKay noted.

  1. Personally, I don’t understand the big hoopla. The decision just said that abortion is not a right under the constitution and throws it to each state to decide. Makes sense. The founding fathers could not have foreseen abortion as a form of “birth control.” No one is talking about contraception. – there really shouldn’t be a reason for abortion unless it’s rape, etc. People just need to calm down and read the decision.

    1. There IS talk of restricting contraception. There are LOTS of reasons why women have a need to control their bodies. Birth control fails. Babies die or are found to be unviable in the womb. Forcing women to risk their physical and mental health waiting for “nature to take it’s course” is cruel. Please don’t feel like YOU have a right to make personal and medical decisions for others!

      1. Come again? Why should he have to be quiet? Men are involved in pregnancy. You lost a court case that was a bad law. Deal with it.

        1. It’s amazing to me that conservative men think of women as a lesser species that don’t deserve agency over their own bodies. You people need strong women in your lives to set you straight, but it’s a catch-22 because strong women avoid your type like the plague. And rightfully so.

          1. Ron. Women are not lesser. Women and men are different. My wife and I are equal. There are many things she can do that I can’t or don’t want to do, or couldn’t do nearly as well. She appreciates me for what I’m good at. That’s what makes a great marriage.

And my wife is very strong/confident, intimidates other men (without trying), and thinks pretty highly of me.

She has disdain for the other side of the aisle, and could probably beat you in arm wrestling. Did I mention she’s beautiful? She’s a Falls Church 8, an Annandale 10, and a Lake Anna 11. I hope you have a wonderful weekend celebrating America’s independence.

      2. @sick of anti-choicers: I’m mad as hell about this ruling too, but cut it with the whole man v woman thing. A well educated woman was part of the majority that sided with that ruling.

This is not a man v woman issue IMO. This is about our government rolling back our liberties and increasingly becoming intrusive into our lives. This is about the government saying it is OK for a state to outlaw a 10 year old who has been raped from getting access to get the health care she needs (yeah, that story broke today).
