If you’ve thought about riding a bike to work, this Friday is a good day to start.

May 15 is Bike to Work Day, and the weather is expected to be perfect – dry and not too hot.

Bike to Work Day is an annual event organized by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments’ Commuter Connections program and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association.

There will be more than 100 pit stops throughout the DMV, including these locations in Annandale and Mason District:

  • Wakefield Park/Audrey Moore Rec Center, 8100 Braddock Road, Annandale, 6:30-9 a.m. Hosted by the Fairfax County Park Authority.
  • Culmore, 6101 Knollwood Drive, Bailey’s Crossroads, 6:30-9 a.m. Hosted by the Fairfax County Department of Transportation.

Riders who preregister will get a T-shirt at a pitstop and will be eligible for a raffle for a new bike or other prizes. Pit stops will have snacks, drinks, and giveaways. This year’s T-shirts are purple.

Now in its 25th year, Bike to Work Day has grown from just a few hundred riders in 2001 to tens of thousands of participants in recent years.

The event is not just for regular bike commuters; it’s aimed at encouraging more people to hop on a bike to get to work. In 2025, 16 percent of participants – more than 1,000 people – had never biked to work before.

First-timers are advised to plan their route in advance using the Fairfax County Bike Map.

There are many benefits of biking to work: It’s healthier, better for the environment, saves money (especially when gas is well over $4 a gallon), and it’s more fun than sitting in traffic.
