Join a virtual service project on MLK Day

Martin Luther King Day is traditionally a time for community service projects. Volunteer Fairfax lists several virtual activities the public can join on MLK Day, Monday, Jan. 17, or this weekend.

Visit the Volunteer Fairfax website for more information on these projects:

The Valentine’s Challenge project calls for volunteers to handcraft Valentine cards from home for Fairfax County Public Schools teachers, support staff, and administrators. The goal is to collect 5,000 Valentines and deliver them to 42 Title I schools.

People who register will receive a digital valentine from Volunteer Fairfax on Jan. 15 with detailed instructions on how to craft your valentine and a recommended supply list. Completed cards can be dropped off at any Fairfax County police station by Jan. 28.

People who register for the Give Together project will receive a digital MLK Jr. Weekend of Service Volunteer Guidebook that outlines service projects families can do together. There are activities suitable for all ages.

Another way to volunteer is to contribute to the Jam the Trolley Food Drive 10 a.m.-noon on Jan. 17 at the Pozez Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia, at 8900 Little River Turnpike, Fairfax.

Donations will help food banks and pantries serve those in need. Among the items most requested are cooking oil, dried beans, rice, canned fruit and vegetables, canned tuna, peanut butter, and healthy cereals.
