[Updated Feb. 20, 3:20 p.m.] One man is dead and a juvenile male has been injured following a shooting in Annandale Feb. 19, the Fairfax County Police Department reports.

The incident happened at the Fairmont Gardens Apartments in the 4100 block of Wadsworth Court shortly before 11 p.m.
When police arrived, they found Anthony Isai Benitez, 18, of Fairfax suffering from gunshot wounds to the upper body in the apartment complex parking lot. Lifesaving measures were attempted, but Benitez was pronounced deceased at the scene by fire and rescue personnel.
The juvenile was found in a nearby apartment suffering from gunshot wounds to the lower body in a nearby apartment. He was treated at a nearby hospital and later released.
Preliminarily, detectives have determined the two victims were outside of an apartment building when a group of individuals approached then began shooting at them. Multiple cartridge casings were found in the parking lot and several vehicles, as well as a building, were damaged as a result of the gunfire. Officers did not find anyone else who reported injuries.
This morning, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled the death a homicide following an autopsy, the FCPD states. This is an active investigation and detectives continue to conduct interviews and process evidence.
Victim specialists from the Major Crimes Bureau’s Victim Services Division have been assigned to ensure the victim’s family is receiving appropriate resources and assistance.
Detectives are asking anyone with information about this incident to call the Major Crimes Bureau at 703-246-7800, option 2. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Crime Solvers.
This is the second homicide in Fairfax County in 2021. A 20-year-old man was fatally shot in Reston earlier this month.

  1. Truly heart warming,
to see criminals venturing out of their comfort zone in Baily's crossroads and trying to expand.

    Keep up the good work!

  2. Kid was a senior at Falls Churh HS, 100% gang related according to my senior at Annandale… media completely silent on this… and Kaye Kory is advocating removing the school resource officers from Annanale and Falls Church… not sure where the equity is in that for every at risk kid in these schools… left to the scourge of gangs for political reasons…

  3. The perps have nothing to worry about. Steve "we don't believe in prosecuting crimes" Descano is on the case and the death penalty is just about to be abolished in Virginia.

  4. The blog refuses to post my comment and edits it out. No fair, and if you think that Penny Gross is not complicit in this mess, you are wrong. Her complacency has abetted this problem! This is an issue of over concentration of Section 8 housing, low income residents and perhaps illegal immigrants living in close quarters. Its an urban demographic this County does not understand or know what to do about. Until this model of ghettoizing is changed, crimes will continue to spike. The BoS needs to get rid of this model and find a new paradigm that will help, not only this demographic but the community as a whole. BoS do you job!

    1. If you post or edit multiple times within a very short window it’ll not publish. It’s not censoring, it’s the software. Put 1984 down.

    2. What does Illegal Immigrants have to do with what's going on in the area. Most of them are people who came looking for a better life not to become criminals. That's a stupid comment and a very ignorant argument. You do now that most of gangs started because of whites attacking the other races right? So people like you who blame things on illegal immigrants are the cause of very dangerous gangs like MS13, bloods or cribs. Look it up and educate yourself.
