Virginia Republicans select Youngkin to run for governor

Long lines of Republican delegates wait in line to vote at the Annandale campus of Northern Virginia Community College. [Virginia-Pilot]

Delegates from the Republican Party of Virginia selected Glenn Youngkin as their nominee for the governor of Virginia May 10.

Youngkin, a former co-CEO of the Carlyle Group, a private equity company, will face off in November with whoever wins the Democratic Primary.

The Republican delegates also chose Jason Miyares as their nominee for attorney general. Miyares represents Virginia Beach in the House of Delegates. [Update, 5/11, 8 p.m.: Winsome Sears, a former delegate from Newport News, won the nomination for lieutenant governor.]

Youngkin, like all of the other Republicans who vied for the nomination, is a strong supporter of former President Donald Trump. He only recently and reluctantly acknowledged that Joe Biden won the presidential election. Among those who campaigned for Youngkin are Sen. Ted Cruz and Corey Stewart.

The Virginia GOP didn’t have a primary, and instead had delegates select nominees for statewide offices at a nomination convention held in 39 locations, including Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale. Vote counting took a long time, as the state GOP opted for a complicated ranked-choice balloting process.

Youngkin, a resident of Great Falls, emerged after six rounds of vote counts. Pete Snyder came in second in the balloting, and State Sen. Amanda Chase came in third.

Virginia Democratic Party Chairwoman Susan Swecker called Youngkin “a far-right extremist who has demonstrated total allegiance to Donald Trump.”

“Throughout this campaign, Youngkin has advanced Trump’s dangerous election conspiracy theories, opposed critical COVID-19 relief for working families and small businesses, and threatened to gut Virginians’ health care,” Swecker said.

  1. Anyone who won't accept the election results after all the lawsuits failed and no real evidence was ever produced or accepted is an idiot and a sore loser, just like Trump

  2. Can there be a republican out there with a shred of decency who does not support the orange one and his stupid election lie? Idiots and sore losers indeed.

  3. Amazing candidate, i wish him all the best and may he win.

Also, i love the comments of the fellows above, always encouraging to witness the open minded smart libtards who share this space with us.

  4. While this guy is bad and I hope he goes down in flames, at least he's not as bad as Amanda "Trump in heels" (yes, she called herself that) Chase. I'd like to have a woman as governor of VA, but not her. Oh, and 5/12 12:28, you're real classy using the word "libtards."

  5. They're making this decision easier than ever. You think Trump is still the president? Thank you, next.

  6. For all the talk the democrats make about inclusion and diversity, their old white guy is going to win, not Youngkin.
