Annandale store sold a $1 million lottery ticket

This store sold a $1 million lottery ticket.

A retired electrician has won $1 million from a Powerball ticket purchased in Annandale, the Virginia Lottery announced on Feb. 24.

The lottery winner bought the ticket at the Express 1 Food Mart at 4713 Backlick Road on Dec. 13. It took him a month to realize he had a winning ticket. “I’m still in shock!” the winner told Virginia Lottery officials when he claimed his prize.

The winner chose to remain anonymous. Virginia law permits any winner of a prize worth at least $1 million to claim it anonymously, so the Virginia Lottery is not publicly disclosing his identity.

The lottery also isn’t revealing whether the winner took the cash option or annual payouts over 30 years.

The winning Powerball ticket, with numbers selected randomly, matched the first five winning numbers, 1-28-31-57-58. It only missed the Powerball number, which was 16. The Express 1 Food Mart won, too. Retailers that sell a $1 million winning ticket receive a $10,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery.

Powerball drawings are held at 10:59 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. The odds of matching all six numbers to win the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million. The overall odds of winning any Powerball prize are 1 in 25.

All Virginia Lottery profits go to K-12 education in Virginia. In FY 2025, the Lottery raised more than $901 million for schools statewide, including $56 million for Fairfax County schools.

The Virginia Lottery automatically withholds taxes for prizes over $5,000, including 24 percent in federal and 4 percent in state taxes. That reduces the $1 million prize to $720,000, which is also likely to put the winner into a higher tax bracket.
