County activates heat plan

Fairfax County has activated its Heat Plan for Wednesday, July 1, through Friday, July 3, due to extreme heat.
The National Weather Service predicts “dangerous, record-breaking heat” with a high temperature for Annandale of 99 degrees and a heat index as high as 106 today. On Thursday, the temperature could reach 102, with a heat index up to 109.
If you see a child or a pet alone in a parked car, call 911.
When Fairfax County’s heat plan is activated, cooling centers around the county will be available during normal operating hours for individuals needing relief from the heat.
Cooling centers in the Mason District/Annandale area:
- Willson Multicultural Center, Seven Corners
- James Lee Community Center, Falls Church
- Minnie Peyton Community Center, Bailey’s Crossroads
- Thomas Jefferson Library, Falls Church
- Providence Rec Center, Falls Church
- George Mason Regional Library, Annandale
- Heritage Center offices, Annandale
- Audrey Moore Rec Center, Annandale
The cooling centers will have bottled water, sunscreen, insect repellent, and body wipes. During extreme heat, facilities may have unexpected closures due to HVAC issues, so check whether the location is open by visiting www.fairfaxcounty.gov/status.
Since the county government is closed on July 3 for Independence Day, most county facilities used as cooling centers will not be available. The Providence and Audrey Moore rec centers will be open on July 3 from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.
In addition, the three emergency shelters for single adults, including the Bailey’s Shelter and Supportive Housing, at 5914 Seminary Road in Bailey’s Crossroads, will activate day and night overflow shelter capacity.
Fairfax County also distributes supplies through outreach workers and other partners who go out into the community to check on unsheltered residents. They will also visit shelters, drop-in centers, and meal sites.
